Meeting of the leaders of Spiritan Development Offices Kimmage Manor, 30th – 31st January 2020

The first-ever international meeting of the leaders of Spiritan Development Offices (SDOs) in Belgium, Ireland, Portugal and the USA was hosted by the Irish Province in Kimmage.

2019 is one of my the few Christmases that I will have spent at home since I first went on overseas mission in 1980. I’m particularly looking forward to the privilege of hearing confessions and saying the Christmas Eve Vigil Mass at Cuan Mhuire, a home where addicts are treated. The centre was given the name ‘The Harbour of Mary’ (in Irish) – in honour of Mary, Our Mother – by its founder Sr. Consilio Fitzgerald RSM.  Listening to Sr Consilio, I grew in appreciating ever more Mary’s role as a mentor in my own life.  I had been gathering wisdom on mentoring from a couple of different sources. Why?

The Spiritans are in East Pokot since the 1980s. After much preparatory work, a permanent mission began in Rotu in 2011 when I moved to this very under-developed and inaccessible part of the region. An early priority was to open a primary school since almost nobody in the parish could read or write or had a good knowledge of the Kiswahili language.

September 2019 visit by St. Michael’s College to Duquesne University A St. Michael’s College group attended the 2019 Global Citizenship Education network in Duquesne. Their invitation had followed on from both the Spiritan Global Education Showcase event and the meeting of the Spiritan Global Citizenship Teachers’ Network in 2018.
